The Other Half of Books And Birds

I have a fun fact to share about myself: my social media name is Books And Birds because I am passionate about parrot rescue and adoption. I personally have five parrots, and I am a regular volunteer at my local parrot rescue! I love all things bird-related, and I love helping educate others about parrot rescue, conservation, and care.

Unfortunately, parrot rescues and sanctuaries in the United Sates are currently in a state of crisis. Parrots are one of the most commonly rehomed animals (according to PETA, 85% of parrots will be rehomed within the first two years of their life), and they're also the hardest animal to find proper homes for. Parrots of all shapes and sizes are wildly intelligent creatures that have very high social and physical needs. Due to overbreeding and constant rehoming, rescues and sanctuaries are being completely overrun and are in need of help now more than ever.

In an effort to bring awareness to this issue, I made this page to share some amazing parrot rescues and sanctuaries that would love support in any way you can offer it! Whether that be sharing their posts on social media, donating, volunteering, or even just spreading the word, it is all hugely helpful for them! These organizations all understand the unique needs of these intelligent animals and work tirelessly to ensure they receive the care they deserve. Feel free to contact any of them to learn more about how you can help support their specific needs.

If you'd ever like recommendations for parrot rescues or sanctuaries in your specific area, more ways to help, or even parrot-specific advice, you are always welcome to send me an email and I will help you as best I can!

East Greenbush, NY

Northeast Avian Rescue is an incredible parrot rescue that facilitates adoptions! This is where all of my own parrots are from, and it's where I volunteer! You can help this rescue by adopting, donating, buying bird supplies from their Amazon wishlist, and volunteering!

Foster Parrots is a huge sanctuary that also facilitates occasional adoptions. They do incredible conservation work alongside their rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Unfortunately, their facility suffered a horrific fire in 2021, so they're currently trying to rebuild and recoup. You can support them by volunteering, touring their sanctuary, donating, shopping from their wishlist, and purchasing their merch!

Benson, AZ

Oasis is a life-care sanctuary that houses a huge number of parrots in their beautiful aviary setup! They do not offer any adoptions, but they can help refer you to other rescues! The Oasis Sanctuary is known to take birds from all over the country in an effort to aid the rehoming crisis. You can support them by donating, becoming a paid member, sponsoring birds, checking out their events and shop (ex: online auctions), and volunteering!

Pink Hill, NC

Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary is a life-care sanctuary that provides a permanent home for parrots in need. They do not facilitate adoptions. One really fun way to support them is by buying their kids book trilogy, the Pirates for Parrots series by Sophia Cancelli, their Fundraising Coordinator. The series is available on Amazon and 100% of the sales go towards the parrots at the sanctuary. You can also support them by donating, touring the sanctuary, buying supplies from their Chewy wishlist, and/or volunteering.

Long Island Parrot Society

Long Island, NY

Long Island Parrot Society is a rescue that regularly facilitates adoptions! Please note, they only adopt parrots out to residents of New York. They also have lots of amazing resources and info on their website! You can support them by adopting/fostering, donating, checking out their events and shop, and becoming a paid member.

Ruffled Feathers Sanctuary is a sanctuary that provides life-care for a large variety of parrots! They also have a huge focus on education and have several programs to teach others about parrots. They currently have an internship program, which is perfect for people studying veterinary medicine or zoology. You can support them by volunteering and checking out their educational resources!
